Temporary Crowns and Bridges

Woman Smiling We have provided you with a temporary crown/bridge to wear until your final restoration is ready. This temporary restoration serves several purposes:
  • It protects the underlying tooth from breakage.

  • Helps minimize sensitivity.

  • Helps maintain position of surrounding teeth.

  • Helps shape soft tissue.

For these reasons, it is important to inform us if you have any problems with your temporary restoration.

Caring for your temporary restoration:

  • Brush your temporary as you would your natural teeth.

  • Floss towards your gums only and slide the floss out as demonstrated. Do Not pull floss away from the gum line as this could dislodge the temporary restoration.

  • If you have a bridge or the temporaries are splinted together, thread the floss as instructed using Glide Floss threaders or Super Floss (both are available at most drug stores).

  • DO NOT CHEW ANYTHING HARD, CHEWY OR STICKY AS THIS WILL PULL OUT OR BREAK YOUR TEMPORARY!

Temporaries are normally worn for a period of 3-4 weeks before receiving your permanent crown/bridge.

Please contact our office if your temporary becomes uncemented, broken, or lost. Let us know if the temporary is in one piece, multiple pieces, or lost and if you are experiencing sensitivity or discomfort. This will help us be prepared to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. There is no charge for the first re-cementation or remake of your temporary should this be necessary. Any additional repairs will have a nominal fee of $35.00 to $100.00 depending on the complexity of your temporary.

In case your temporary comes off after office hours, holidays, weekends, etc. and your tooth is sensitive or the temporary is necessary for esthetics, you may replace it on a short-term basis using denture adhesive (i.e., poly grip).

BE ADVISED THIS FIX IS STRICTLY FOR ESTHETICS OR COMFORT!

  • Dry the tooth and the temporary as much as possible using a paper towel and/or hairdryer

  • Place a small “BB” size amount of adhesive in the temporary and place over the tooth.

  • DO NOT EAT OR SLEEP WITH A TEMPORARY THAT HAS BEEN RECEMENTED WITH DENTURE ADHESIVE!

  • This is a short-term solution - contact our office to have the temporary recemented more securely.

In most cases, it is important to have your temporary replaced. We will try to coordinate this with your schedule as much as possible. Every attempt is made to accommodate you as soon as possible.

Most patients have no problem with their temporary restoration, however, if you do experience any problem, or if you have any questions, please call our office.
